Coconut Steamboat, a steamy delight

There’s a delightful dining outlet in Eco Botanic City called Coconut Steamboat that offers coconut chicken hot pot, a recipe which originated from Hainan, China, where fresh coconut juice is used as the hot pot soup base.

This conjures a sweetness in the broth that is both pleasant and fragrant.

If you’re not a fan of the coconut soup base, you can opt for the fish maw chicken hot pot.

For the coconut soup base, the chef uses a mixture of local coconut and fragrant coconut. The specialty sauce is also something that is not to be missed. Yummilicious!

Soo Jun Yang, the co-owner of Coconut Steamboat, was an administrative staff before he embarked on the business venture with a partner.

Besides the two signature hot pot dishes, another popular dish in the menu is the Chinese waxed meat claypot rice and wild bamboo pith minced shrimp.

The non-halal restaurant opens from 11am to 2pm & 5pm to 11pm daily, and is closed on Mondays.Address: 41, Jalan Eko Botani 3/7,Taman Eko Botani, 79100 Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

Novel concept cafes, restaurants with unusual recipes and brand names that you don’t see everyday and everywhere are found in Eco Botanic City, Iskandar Puteri.

The stunning township is only a 15 minute drive away from the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.

Happy kids, happy parents

Only a parent with a young kid in tow, will truly understand the meaning of dining dramas and mealtime challenges.  Apart from dealing with children who can be picky eaters or attention seekers, parents also need to constantly worry about the environment, health, hygiene, safety, security so much so that they are deprived of the simple joy of enjoying their own meal.

At Wan Masak Family Café, parents can enjoy their “alone” or “couple” time as the kids will be having fun with the carousel, slides, ball pool and toys.

Darrell Tee (seated) seen here with his business partner, Ng Wei

Darrell Tee, one of the owners and managing director of the café, said  he  and his wife also face mealtime woes when they’re out with their 4-year-old son.

Tee said he stumbled upon such concept cafes during his travels to China, Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.

And that was how Wan Masak came about.

Apart from all that, the food available here is nutritious as they use olive oil, and food creation certainly looks cute.

Diners with kids age 2 to 12 years will be charged RM10 for cleaning fee. The kids are required to wear socks when they play here.

Tee said activities for parents and kids such as baking class and story-telling sessions will soon be held at the cafe.

The café can accommodate up to 90 people.  Opening hours are 12pm to 8.30pm (weekdays), 11am to 9pm (weekends), and is closed on Wednesdays.

Address: 19A & 21A, Jalan Eko Botani 3/5, Taman Eko Botani, 79100, Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

Love Chalet

Love Chalet

The houses here are built on stilts above the muddy mangrove shoreline in Pontian, Johor. For a city dweller, Kukup is a nice little getaway to experience life in a rural setting.

The boardwalks leading to the houses are part concrete, part wooden and the locals are seen confidently riding their motorcycles and bicycles along the narrow and path even when it’s pitch dark.

Tiew Kim Leong, also known as Little Brother among the locals, owns and manages the Love Chalet. Born and bred in Kukup, Tiew says the seven units of wooden cabins were built three years ago. The architectural design of the log cabins, which feature White Pine timber imported from Russia, was inspired by trips to Thailand and Cambodia.

Tiew said there are many attractions nearby that visitors can explore.  Among them is a visit to an ancient Chinese temple, a boat ride to Pulau Kukup to see the mangrove forest, and there are also karaoke and fishing activities. The village also has lots of mudskippers and a variety of marine life.

Guests can choose rooms with Japanese-style tatami mats or log cabins that can accommodate up to four persons in a room.  All the units have attached bathrooms, air-conditioners, television and WiFi.

Fear-stricken

A 46-year-old food hawker is breaking ties with her younger sister after loan sharks allegedly launched two attacks at her house in Taman Bukit Mewah, Johor Bahru, in December 2019 and again in January this year.

Lai Poh Yoke claimed the first incident saw her cars and walls of her house being covered with red and yellow paint, while on January 22 the loan sharks allegedly hurled Molotov cocktail into the house which resulted in a fire.

Lai said she believed the incident occurred because her 40-year-old sister who is working in Singapore had borrowed money from loan sharks.

Lai last saw her sister last November, and had texted her sister when the first incident happened. However, her sister had denied any involvement with the loan sharks.

Michael Tay with Lai and her brother.

In a press conference organised by Johor MCA Government Coordinating Affairs chairman Michael Tay, Lai said she received a call from the men who claimed her sister owed them SGD35,000 (RM104,009).

“As she (sister) has put my family in danger, I no longer acknowledge her as my sister,” she said, adding that the two incidents had caused her to suffer a loss of about RM5,000 on top of the psychological trauma.

“I’m only a hawker earning about RM1,500 per month.  How can I settle the loan amount?” said Lai, who has lodged a police report.

Lai has a 20-year-old son and she is also taking care of her sister’s children aged 12 to 22.

Meanwhile, on the subject of the coronavirus outbreak, Tay urged the public to have more confidence in the government.

“People should not take any news that happened in China and make it viral here.  This only instils fear and causes panic.  I hope for life to return to normal.

“Because of fear, people are not going to restaurants, and business is adversely affected.  Since there is no vaccine yet, there is only containment.

“So we should wash our hands, take all the precautionary measures, wear face masks and go to the clinic if you feel unwell.  As for food operators, they should sanitise the eatery, wear gkves and masks… take all the necessary precautions. The public should not refrain from eating out, or the whole economy will collapse if the paranoia continues,” Tay said.

Sutera Mall celebrates Chap Goh Mei

The car park area of Sutera Mall was abuzz with activities last night as the management of the mall together with Southern Chinese Musical Society co-organised a Chap Goh Mei party featuring, among others, a live band performance, wushu performance, 24 Drum performance, Chinese orchestra performance and a mass tossing of Yee Sang to invite more prosperity and cheer into the new year.

Chap Goh Mei, which in Hokkien means the 15th night of the Lunar New Year, is vastly celebrated by the Chinese community to mark the end of the festival. It is a tradition for those who are still single to throw mandarin oranges. However, I’m not sure whether it is to throw the fruit randomly and see whom it hits or to take aim at someone that catches your fancy. In the olden days when there was no Tinder, Clover, whatever, this was one of the ways to snag a significant other besides matchmaking.

I hear the practice is to throw the mandarin oranges into the sea. And the contemporary trend is to pen your wishes or your name on the fruit before the throw.

Chap Goh Mei is also the Chinese version of Valentine’s Day.

Johor Tourism, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Liow Cai Tung attended the event together with representatives of Skudai Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Johor Skudai Tien Hiew Kiong, Persatuan Tabib Cina Tionghua Johor, Persatuan Hainan Johor Bahru, Persekutuan Tiong Hua Johor Bahru, among others.

On a more serious note, Liow in her speech reminded the local community to be mindful of general hygiene and the necessary precautionary measures now that Singapore has on Feb 7 increased the coronavirus outbreak level to Orange — just one step below Code Red.

“Many people in the state go across the Causeway to work. We have beefed up health screening at all entry points but the people must also take it upon themselves to take care of their own health as well as the health of others. It is each and everyone’s responsibility to curb the spread of the deadly virus,” Liow said.

Serving the Eco Botanic and expat community

Eco World Eco South divisional general manager Datuk Hoe Mee Ling (4th from left) and Dr Ong Gim Seong (right) with other representatives at the Newcastle Medical Clinic.

When it comes to education and healthcare, go for the best that you can afford.

We’ve all heard of the Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMED) in EduCity, Iskandar Puteri, Johor.  But not many know about the Newcastle Medical Clinic operating in Eco Botanic City, near the campus, since October 2018.

The Newcastle Medical Clinic, officially declared open on 27th October, delivers UK healthcare standard at affordable rates.

Dr Ong Gim Seong explains that this is NUMED’s CSR initiative to give back to the local community.

“We run the clinic as close as the UK standard and the consultation fee is RM30 to RM35.  I am stressing this because we have received feedback that the public have this misconception that the consultation fee is going to be very expensive judging by the name and look of the clinic.

“As the number of patients grow, we will start a research arm so the students can gain more knowledge and skills,” said Dr Ong, adding that the clinic is run with approval from both the Malaysian and UK relevant authorities.

The clinic, which is currently drawing mainly the Eco Botanic and expat community, features a X-ray room and two treatment rooms for minor surgical procedures.

Dr Ong also pointed out that the fire alarm system in the clinic was set up following the UK’s safety requirement.

There is also a lounge on the second floor of the clinic where medical talks are held to share knowledge with the public from time to time.  The cosy lounge is also ideal for private discussion

The clinic opens from 8.30am to 5pm daily, and is closed on Sunday. Lunch break is from 12.30pm to 1.30pm.

The Newcastle Medical Clinic is located in the Eco Boulevard of Eco Botanic City where there are 200 three-storey lifestyle shoplots with English-colonial inspired architecture, like the ones we see on classy shopping strips in European towns.

Hello February

Updated

Oh no! Watched this clip “Coronavirus -Inside info and discussion” right after I posted. No no no, pets are not the cause of this. This clip is long but so informative.

Original post

Didn’t realise it’s already the first day of February. Checked out YouTube and found the clip “Coronavirus – Doctors Arrested for revealing the truth” just now. The second one “Wuhan Virus China Man …” — I had watched yesterday. When a matter is of public interest, there should be transparency. This is to alert, not cause alarm. Sending prayers to all those affected.

Have a safe and blissful weekend, everyone! This goes out to all living beings in every part of the universe. Not leaving anyone out. Life is so precious and transient.
